cf. Richard Merkin stated, the offered lot, is one of three paintings based upon movie stills from classic David Griffith Films. The offered lot relates to the Griffith 1919 film, Broken Blossoms, starring Lillian Gish.
The artist received his MFA in painting in 1963, from the Rhode Island School of Design, Professor Emeritus, Department of Painting; taught at RISD 1963-2005.
Merkin merges his role as a connoisseur of city life with his role as painter and social historian, he retrieves lost cultural artifacts, a gangster, foreigners, a bowler and generally obscure things, with Jazz Age undertones, on canvas in cubist, comic-laced landscapes or interior scenes replete with tropical colors.
